What do dental assistants do?
Working as a dental assistant is a hugely rewarding job. You have the satisfaction of knowing that you are making a real difference to people’s quality of life. It is also a varied role. Essentially working as a dentist’s second pair of hands, you will perform tasks such as sterilising dental instruments, passing instruments to the dentist as required during procedures, exposing dental radiographs, fabricating provisional crowns and taking impressions.
Regulations in Ireland
The ICI course in Dental Assisting & Nursing is offered as a foundation studies course only. It does not qualify you for membership in the Irish Dental Association to practice as a dental hygienist. The course may be useful for existing dental nurses and hygienists who wish to undertake professional development training or those who wish to undertake a foundation studies program prior to undertaking future studies in dental nursing. Most other countries such as Australia, New Zealand, and many states within the United States do not regulate dental assistants.

Foundation Certificate
Our dental assistant course leads to the awarding of a Foundation Certificate. This qualification recognises the graduate’s capacity for initiative and judgement across a broad range of technical and management functions.
Graduates typically have personal responsibility and autonomy (semi-independence) in performing technical operations or organizing others in the workplace.

Foundation Certificate Level 24 weeks Studying a dental assistant course online with ICI means you work at your own pace. With no assignment deadlines, you dictate how quickly you complete the learning programme.
If you want to fast track the course, you can complete it within a matter of months. Alternatively, you can work through the material more slowly. We allow up to three years to complete this dental assistant training programme.
